To be a CERT member, all you need to do is take the standard 21-hour CERT class. Calhoun County is proud to have over a dozen state-certified CERT Trainers. These trainers represent agencies including the county's two civil defense groups, EMA, hazmat team, area fire departments, and amateur radio operators. In order for CERT to be recognized by the State of Alabama, the 21-hour CERT class must be under the supervision of a state-certified trainer. However, individual modules may be taught by subject matter experts such as firefighters (for fire protection and hazmat) and paramedics (for disaster medical operations and triage).
The Calhoun County CERT conducts the 21-hour CERT class periodically for the citizens of Calhoun County. As CERT training focuses on preparing the individual to respond to disasters within the home or community, participation in the broader range of activities conducted by the Calhoun County CERT is encouraged but not neccessarily required. Additionally, CERT's may be sponsored by agencies, such as the Calhoun County EMA which sponsors the Calhoun County CERT, fire departments, schools, civic organizations, churches, and companies.
